So for "intrepid" we could use "don't test it," second guessed it" or "tepid." They don't have to be perfect rhymes, just sound similar when you say them out loud.

Once you've got a list of words and rhymes, memorize them and incorporate them into your freestyle raps. Notice that you are still freestyling, but creating a list of rhymes you can focus more on what you want to say with the words instead of focusing on the words themselves.

Now that you're vocabulary is all set, it's time to step up your vocals. Most dope freestylers have interesting voices and many of them change their tone to express their emotions. You can practice this as well. Simply freestyle in different emotions to broaden your scope; first, try rapping angry, then sad, then laid back. You won't sound like Snoop Dogg right off the bat, but with practice you'll soon realize how to connect your emotions with your voice.

While practicing the following exercises, try spitting freestyle raps while watching TV or walking around a room. As you see something new, try to rap about it. If you get stuck, you always have your safe words. Once you feel comfortable rapping about new images, freestyle in front of a mirror and watch how you look while delivering the lines. Are you confident? Are you selling yourself effectively, or do you still seem shy? Imagine yourself starring in a hip hop video: would you want to watch this person in the mirror?

By following these techniques, your freestyle raps will improve thanks to a larger vocabulary, your comfort with impromptu delivery and a stronger visual persona. Keep in mind this doesn't happen on a Saturday; it takes a few weeks before you start to notice results, but when you do, it's well worth it!

How To Get Rid Of Fruit Flies With A Homemade Fruit Fly Trap

They love bits of rotting food remnants and seem to thrive in even the smallest amount. When fruit flies move in, they just don't want to leave and will lay eggs in and on anything they can find - fruits & vegetables left on the counter, sink drains, garbage disposals, empty bottles & cans, garbage bags, and even mops and rags.

A Few Fun Facts About Fruit Flies:

- Can lay up to 500 eggs at a time

- Their entire lifecycle is complete in about a week

- While considered mainly a pest, they have the potential to contaminate food with dangerous bacteria

We all know that removing the food, getting rid of the garbage & cleaning up plays a big role, but we also know what it's like to move a piece of fruit and have a swarm of fruit flies fill the air only to escape your attempts at killing them. Where are they gonna go? Obviously the ones flying around can't be easily captured or killed, so they'll linger about until they find some other place to lay eggs and the whole cycle starts again.

In all my attempts, I found the best way to capture and remove the ones that escape is to create a simple trap using a jar, plastic wrap and a piece of food. Here's how it works:

1. Get a small jar you don't plan on using again ( like a baby food jar or something similar ) and wash it out well. Make sure it is not a jar with a funky smell such as a used pickle jar or anything that use to have strong spices. You want a clean, odorless jar.

2. Take a chunk of banana and place inside the jar. This is why you want a clean, odorless jar - so that the banana smell won't be overpowered by other not-so-tempting smells. Banana seems to work the best, but you can experiment.

3. Fit a piece of plastic wrap over the top of the jar, making sure that it fits tight and well sealed around the edges. Then take a pen or pencil and poke 4 to 5 holes in the plastic, just big enough for a fruit fly to fit into. Once a fruit fly crawls in, it can't get out. You would think they would just fly back out through the holes, but they won't!

4. Place the jar in an area where you have seen the most fruit flies. Depending on the amount of fruit flies you have, you can expect to start seeing the jar fill up within just a few hours. After 24 hours, you will discover just how bad your fruit fly problem is!

This simple, inexpensive & safe method works perfectly and if you don't want the jar on public display, you can always slip it behind the garbage can, in the cupboard or even under the sink (Just don't forget about it!). You will want to empty the jar every 3-4 days before any eggs have a chance to hatch. While adult fruit flies can't easily escape through the holes, their maggots can very easily, and besides that - they are disgusting to see crawling around in the jar. You don't want to see these things crawling on your counter!

Cleaning out the jar shouldn't be a problem. If you have a kind heart, you can choose to let them go outside. Personally, I spray the little buggers with bug spray, wash out the jar and start the whole process over again if I think there are still some fruit flies left to capture.

For bad fruit fly problems, you will want to use this method for a good two weeks to make sure you've captured the majority of fruit flies. You might even want to use a few jars in different places. Before long, your kitchen will be back to normal.

The History of Rap and Hip Hop Music

The origin of hip-hop can be traced back as far as the ancient tribes in Africa. Rap has been compared with the chants, drumbeats and foot-stomping African tribes performed before wars, the births of babies, and the deaths of kings and elders. Historians have reached further back than the accepted origins of hip-hop. It was born as we know it today in the Bronx, cradled and nurtured by the youth in the low-income areas of New York City.

The History of Rap and Hip Hop Music

Fast-forward from the tribes of Africa to the ghettos of Kingston, Jamaica in the late sixties. The impoverished of Kingston gathered together in groups to form DJ conglomerates. They spun roots and culture records and communicated with the audience over the music. At the time, the DJ's comments weren't as important as the quality of the sound system and its ability to get the crowd moving. Kool Herc grew up in this community before he moved to the Bronx.

During the late sixties, reggae wasn't popular with New Yorkers. As a DJ, Kool Herc spun rhythm and blues records to please his party crowd. But, he had to add his personal touch. During the breaks, Herc began to speak to his audience as he had learned to do in Jamaica. He called out, the audience responded, and then he pumped the volume back up on the record. This call and response technique was nothing new to this community who'd been reared in Baptist and Methodist churches where call and response was a technique used by the speakers to get the congregation involved. Historians compare it to the call and response performed by Jazz musicians and was very much a part of the culture of Jazz music during the renaissance in Harlem.

Herc's DJ style caught on. His party's grew in popularity. He began to buy multiple copies of the same albums. When he performed his duties as a DJ, he extended the breaks by using multiple copies of the same records. He chatted, as it is called in dance hall, with his audience for longer and longer periods.

Others copied Herc's style. Soon a friendly battle ensued between New York DJs. They all learned the technique of using break beats. Herc stepped up the game by giving shout-outs to people who were in attendance at the parties and coming up with his signature call and response. Other DJs responded by rhyming with their words when they spoke to the audience. More and more DJs used two and four line rhymes and anecdotes to get their audiences involved and hyped at these parties.

One day, Herc passed the microphone over to two of his friends. He took care of the turn table and allowed his buddies to keep the crowd hyped with chants, rhymes and anecdotes while he extended the breaks of different songs indefinitely. This was the birth of rap as we know it.

Hip-hop has evolved from the days of the basement showdowns to big business in the music industry. In the seventies and eighties, the pioneers and innovators of the rap record was the DJ. In 1839 a 36 year old Prussian physicist named Wilhelm Dove discovered when 2 different low frequencies are played simultaneously, one frequency in each ear, interference beats produce an auditory hallucination of a pulsing, regular change in volume.

Normal human hearing covers frequencies between 20 and 20,000 Hz. To make binaural beats work, the different tones played into the different ears must be between 1,000 and 1,500 Hz and the tone difference must be no more than 30 Hz.

Under these conditions the brain produces a neural phenomenon that the individual perceives as a pulsing, regular shift in volume, as if the volume control on a radio was being turned up and then down and then back up. What is fascinating is that if these two frequencies were played together without isolating one frequency to one ear and the other frequency to the other ear, the cross-interference of the two tones would produce exactly the same effect, recordable by external devices. This is what makes binaural beats interesting neurologists.

It has been hypothesized that what is happening is similar to what the brain does to compensate the visual blind spot in our field of vision. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, here's a quick explanation of the visual blind spot:

As a Hiphoppa whose been in the music industry for years, I have seen a lot of changes. I've seen the cassette come and go, vinyl get pushed from everybody to only deejays, and the birth and near death of the cd. I've also seen the rise of many independent record labels and fewer and fewer artists getting signed by record labels.

Starting a Hiphop Record Label versus Getting Signed

I've seen artists get signed and blow up and I've seen them go independent and blow up. So which is better: Going independent or getting signed? Both have their pros and cons. Let's take a look at a few.

The benefits of getting signed can be huge...if you got the right things in place. Generally to get signed, you need a marketable demo, an 8x10 head shot, a bio, and a whole lot of patience and hustle. This is typically not an overnight process. Depending on your budget, it may take months to complete your demo package. With today's technology, lets say it takes you 2 months.

You are going to need a place to produce your music and if you don't have your own studio you either have to build one or find one to record. You also need to find a good photographer for your 8x10 glossys. The final major step is writing a compelling bio about your group. This is just the beginning!

Once you've got that done, you need to be able to reproduce it and solicit it to different labels and A&R's. I remember sending out countless demos. An artist could easily get discouraged at this point. But if and when you get a record deal there is still more work to do. Now you have to actually negotiate your deal, promote your album, and hopefully make some money at the end of the day. Its a simple process but not an easy one.

A good label will offer marketing and promotions dollars for your project(s), distribution and fair accounting so that you can keep up with your sales, expenses, and true profit. You may even get tour support for your album. Sometimes artists get advances for the expenses and they often have to be repaid or recouped. These fees must be paid back to the label before you as the artist see your profit.

So how does going independent differ from getting signed?

Well, generally as an independent you don't have the big budget that a big label has but you should definitely have more creative control over your career and business. That's not to say its easy. Its not. Once again, simple but not easy. To me the independent route is better for several reasons though:

More creative control of your music

Easier to build a niche following

You control distribution of your music

You can sell your independent label for profit in the future

You can create powerful strategic alliances

You keep more of the profits

Different tax benefits, etc.

The list could go on.

However, and being real, it is a very rough road. For most independents, there are no overnight success stories. Its a daily grind with much to learn. It helps to have some written goals so you
know where you're going. The music business is a business. Never forget that. You should study businesses in the music industry as well as other industries to help make your business better.

Still, this knowledge doesn't guarantee success but it helps you get closer to being successful in the long run than someone who doesn't know.

And some of the steps for being an independent are the same as the steps for getting a deal.
Recording 10 to 15 good songs, pressing them up on a cd or downloadable mp3, and marketing your work are almost the same things that need to be done when shopping for a deal.

With today's technology its not difficult to do these things. Why not press some up to sell and still shop for a deal? This is the way to generate income and still look for other opportunities? Once again its not an easy road but the lessons learned will be invaluable to your career.

And even though you are handling business, you still have to make sure you are creating songs. Don't stray away from being creative.

There is always gonna be a definite repetition and you can follow that repetition with your beat too.

Flow is no great secret, despite what some may say. Singers have flow. Preachers have flow. With a little hard work, you can have flow.

It is, simply put, the vocal quality of your voice. I'd like to take the mystery out of flow in this article. Here's how to strengthen your flow:

MC's are essentially made up of two parts: flow and lyrics. In this exercise you only care about flow. Play a beat and freestyle over it, going as long as you can without stopping to breathe. Don't worry about rhyming; you can just as easily "doo whap" your way through the exercise. The focus should be on developing sounds that connect with each other and the beat.

Try rapping in different accents: English, French, Middle Eastern, whatever. You may laugh, but look at Slick Rick. Next time you freestyle with others, try to focus on lyrics. When you freestyle alone, focus on flow. When you are comfortable with both, try incorporating them together.

Lastly, you want to change your speed. Start off trying to rap as fast as possible, but with a constant beat (early Outkast albums are a lot like this). Then, slow it down and try and keep in time. Now, try to rhyme super fast for eight measures, then super slow for eight measures, then super fast for eight measures, and so on. By working out the extremes, you'll feel much more comfortable changing your speed while rapping, which will make you sound more original and polished.
